To create containers for mezcals, the natives of Southern Mexico began producing specialized vessels out of the rich, dense black clay deposits near the village of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca. This pottery became more decorative as it evolved. In the 1930’s some artisans, no doubt influenced by the crazy mezcal-induced antics of the people who drank the mezcal, began to fashion the containers in the shape of a monkey, an animal long associated with playful and crazy behavior in Mexico. Issues of fragilty and evaporative loss of the spirits through their porous clay have caused the original “changos mezcaleros” or “mezcal monkeys” to no longer be used commercially for mezcal. They have given way to standard mass-produced glass containers. Our individually created glass bottle, an updated version of the true chango mezcalero, is an homage to those first creative artisans. Chango Loco Mezcal is proudly reviving the chango mezcalero and celebrating the tradition of artisan-created mezcals true to the techniques passed from father to son for centuries. Using only the finest agave and traditional methods, Chango Loco produces the highest quality, small-batch spirits. Each limited edition bottle is hand blown, numbered, painted and filled using traditional equipment and techniques.
